Ma'din

Ma'din

"So why did you transfer back?" Harki propped her head up on her hands
as she looked over the man in the furs next to her. "Especially in the
winter."

He stretched out languorously and put his hands behind his
head. "Born and raised here and been back for a while." He shrugged.
"Just usually keep to myself is all." He rolled his head to look at her.
"Aznith's been in your flights before, you probably just didn't notice. He
never
won your green." He shrugged.

She shrugged, even as she was trying to remember if she'd seen Ma'din
before, when they were kids. He was younger than she was, though, and
she'd tended to run with an older crowd. "It's true. I'm usually
thinking about other things when Cerillith rises. And you do blend
into the crowd."

He blinked and swatted her bottom. "Hey now. No insults. "

"Ow!" Harki rubbed her stinging skin and shot him a black look. "That was
hardly an insult. Don't get all fragile on me."

Ma'din snorted. "Please, that was barely a tap and a got you worse than that
earlier." His brow quirked knowingly at her. "Blending in to the crowd?
Really?" He rolled over to face her and his voice was dry. "My ego is once
against wounded."

"So soothe it." She smiled, suddenly inspired. "Talk about yourself!"

That got her an arched brow. "What do you want to know? I can start at the
beginning, I was born..."

"No!" She poked him in the ribs. "Tell me something interesting!"

He immediately jerked and shifted away with a choke. "Not there." He was
trying desperate not to smile. "I'm ticklish."

Her smile grew wicked. "Well now. That _is_ interesting. Big, bad
brownrider like yourself, ticklish? This is valuable information."

He eyed her hands for a moment then arched a brow at the smile on her
face. " Don't even think about it. I'll paddle your backside and not
even blink."

"You could try." Her eyes flashed a challenge. Ma'din wasn't _that_
big, and she wasn't some small, delicate lady. Neither of them would
come out well. "Or, you could tell me something to distract me. Or--
here's a game. Tell me something true and something false, and I'll
guess which is what."

"How do you know I'll be telling the truth?" Ma'din shrugged. "Fine."
Naked, he laid back with his hands under his head as he thought about
two facts to share. "Okay. I've been weyrmated or I have a son."

"Neither!" Harki stuck her lower lip out in a pout. "You blew it when
you told me you'd just lie anyway. But I still learned something about
you-- you lie even when you don't have to. And you're ticklish. So
that's two things. Ha! I win!"

"Actually..." his voice trailed off. "You lose." He smirked. "One of
those is true." Ma'din turned his head to look at her, both brows raised.

Shells! Harki narrowed her eyes and tried her best to read Ma'din's
mind. Maybe he was telling the truth about one of them? Or maybe he
was jerking her chain and lying about lying. That seemed like
something he would do. But maybe he was playing fair...? "_If_ one of
those is true, and I'm not saying that either is, then you have a son.
You'd sooner cut off your own foot than be weyrmated. But I also
highly doubt the son."

He watched her, his smirk remaining. "I might now, but I was a kid
once." He snorted. "Nope. Don't have a son that I know about. Had a
weyrmate right after I graduated."

"No, you didn't!" Harki laughed, trying to imagine Ma'din with... anybody.
Some sweet young thing he could curl into a domestic life with, who would
bake him cookies and cuddle on the couch. "I don't believe you one bit!"

Ma'din looked over at her and rolled on to his side, his mouth twisting up
in a wry grin. "I did. Swear on Aznith's hide. Pretty thing, too. Thought
she could 'fix me'." He shrugged. "Didn't work out." His grin widened. "You
should ask her about it some time."

"There's nobody to ask," she shot back. But what if there was? Ma'din's
infuriating smirk was going to drive her bonkers!

"Really? There isn't?" He propped his head on his hand and his teeth
flashed. "Who do you know that likes to try to fix things for people?"

"Wait... what? Rorela?!" Harki gaped at him, eyes wide. He _had_ to be
lying. Didn't he? "No. You're _joking_! She's never been weyrmated, I'm sure
of it!"

Pleased that he had shocked her, Ma'din faced the wide eyed gape with a
half-smile. "She probably doesn't even think too much about it. It was only
for three months and It was almost ten Turns ago."

"I don't believe you," Harki muttered. But she sort of did. What if they
_had_ been weyrmated? What sort of story would Rorela tell about it? And why
had she never mentioned it before? Rorela talked about everything.

Ma'din held up a hand. "On Aznith's hide." He laid a hand on her side.
"Still don't believe me? Have you ever seen her with a younger man now?
Besides me? I put her off of 'em. We still get along and we still like
bedding each other, but nothing more than that."

"So tell me about it," Harki shot back. "Convince me." She was
half-convinced already, but still sure that Ma'din was playing her. It was
very confusing.

"My my, aren't we nosy. You could always ask her, you know." He smirked, but
didn't see a problem in sharing something that had happened so long ago, so
he shrugged. "Spent two turns as a weyrling. Got in trouble all the time.
Rorela saw it, I guess and tried to be my friend. That didn't work so she
bedded the blazes out of me. I though I was in heaven, older experienced
green rider like that. I guess she took a liking to my smart ass. Scooped me
up right after graduation and for three months, she tried to get me on the
straight and narrow, but I wasn't of a mind to be fixed. Ended up fighting
and split." He shrugged again. "That's about it."

"Wow. You think you know a person." Harki rubbed her hand over her face.
"That's so weird."

"Me or Rorela?" He smirked and patted her bottom. "Why d'you think she knew
me so well? It's not like I'm the most sociable of people." He began rubbing
her bottom in slow circles. "Besides, it was over a long time ago. " he
propped himself up on his elbow to look at her bare backside and his hand
tickled down the back of her thighs. "And there are so many more interesting
things to do."

The greenrider giggled and swatted his hand away before pushing Ma'din onto
his back and straddling his middle. "I suppose." She slowly lowered herself
so that her lips brushed his hear as she murmured, "Convince me."

Ma'din promptly got a good handful of her rump and pressed her downward with
a grin. "Shouldn't be too difficult." He turned his head and caught her lips
with his.
