Description: Derwill finally finds some time for his 'research' again
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 9, day 5 of Turn 7
It had been a while since he'd had the time for his research. After his
initial interviews, there had been one emergency after the other. And the
paperwork involved in emergency repairs. Then the actual repairs. And the
reports on that. But now, finally, Derwill had some time to return to his
pet project. It wasn't long after he'd set up sentry in the bathing cavern,
when he saw the Weyrleader's dragon land at the waterline. Well, he hadn't
tried a bronzerider yet!
"Sir!" Derwill called out as he approached G'nir. "Do you have a moment for
me? I'm Derwill, Senior Journeyman Techncian for your Weyr."
"Yes? What is it?" G'nir asked, expecting some kind of technical trouble in
the Weyr, since he was technician.
"Well, Sir, I was wondering how you could describe your communication with
your dragon."
"Excuse me?" the question took him completely by surprise.
"Well, I'm researching dragon communication, so I'm trying to gather as
much information as I can. I'm hoping to be able to develop a device some
day that will make communication possible for us non-riders."
"I think you're just wasting your time," G'nir said directly. "Such device
isn't possible. And you can't really explain the way we communicate with
our life-mates."
"People said that about a lot of things," Derwill shrugged. "And if it
turns out to be possible after all, it could change everything. Could you
please try to explain, Sir? I haven't had a bronzerider's opinion on things
yet."
"Explain what and how?" G'nir asked rhetorically. "That I have another
conciousness linked to mine and it goes deeper than just two humans
talking."
"Yes, like that," Derwill nodded as he instantly turned to making notes.
"Is the connection instantly, like your dragon knows your thought right
away, or does it take a few seconds to respond back and forth?"
G'nir stared at him. "I'm Weyrleader, I don't exactly have time for this,"
annoyance has crept to his voice.
"But it's especially important to you /because/ you're the Weyrleader,
Sir," Derwill ignored the tinge of annoyance in the other man's voice.
"Just imagine how much life and land it could save if you could communicate
with the ground crew just as you fly over during fall."
"That's hardly a problem," G'nir said dismissivly. "The ground crews know
their job, we don't need to communicate with them. If they don't, well,
it's their fields the burrows are destroying. Besided, ground crews come
out _after_ Fall has passed their area," G'nir continued and pointed
obvious flaw in his reasoning.
"With all due respect, Sir, if it's their responsiblity, than why do you
fly sweeprides?" Derwill knew there would always be people who opposed to
his ideas, it was the curse of being ahead of your time, but he had to at
least try and make others see the benefits.
"To spot the burrow's _outside_ the hold areas," G'nir replied. It was over
simplication and not quite true...they did sweep holds too. He was getting
more and more annoyed and didn't feel like explaining it to Derwill.
Derwill sighed in exasperation. "Can't you at least humor me, Sir?" he
asked almost piteously.
"I'm busy," G'nir said with flat tone.
"Too busy for one of your own people, trying to improve your Weyr?" Derwill
asked semi-innocently. He knew he was pushing it big time.
"Improving our Weyr would be figuring out if the electrical system can
handle enlargening the Weyr or just keeping the lights on so I don't have
to look for glow stones. Trying to figure out something that's
inexplainable is just waste of time," G'nir replied with some heat. His
temper had been short after Hygalia's leaving and this technician wasn't
improving it.
"Everything seems inexplicable at first," Derwill replied, but he had to
admit G'nir did have a point there. That and the man was starting to look
more and more agitated. Maybe it was time to retreat. "Well, I guess I will
leave you to your business then, Sir."
"Yes, that might be the best," G'nir remarked dryly.
"Thank you for your time, Sir," Derwill said, a slight emphasis on the
'time', his brows arched just so slightly. Sometimes he felt so entirely
underestimated...
