"So. You and Ma'din." Harki was lounging on Rorela's bed, a wine glass in one hand and her chin propped up in the other. Drills had been followed by a sweepride, and the greenrider was enjoying the delicious soreness in her legs and arms that came from a long day. A glass of wine with a friend before crawling into her own furs was exactly the right way to end it. "Either he's lying-which he might be, or you were _weyrmated_."

Rorela blinked, the glass of wine paused at her lip. She frowned. "Oh. That." She took a sip and shrugged. "He's not lying, but that was a long time ago. I'm surprised he told you about it. We don't even talk about it anymore."

"You think you know a person." Harki exhaled a long, loud, theatrical sigh. "Weyrmated. I never would have guessed it. From either of you!"

Rorela answered with another shrug. "Like I said, we really don't talk about it. It was a mistake."

"That's what he said too." Harki was quiet for a moment. "Why not?"

"Why don't we talk about it?" Rorela took another sip and tugged at her ear in thought. "I don't know. I guess we don't need to. We both know it wasn't a good thing. We both figured out we weren't the weyrmating type. I don't have any ill feelings about him, obviously. And I know him better than most, I suppose, so we don't really need to talk about past mistakes. Shards, I don't even think about it any more."

"Why do you think it went wrong?" Harki asked curiously.

"Well..." Rorela put aside her glass and rubbed her cheek. "...you have to understand that Ma'din has a lot of anger in him. As a weyrling he was refused graduation twice because he just wouldn't bend to authority. He hates it, even now. Maybe its because of his rearing, but he doesn't talk about that either. But he was worse when he was younger. I was able to calm him a little and I think I fell in love with what I thought he could have been. It just didn't work. We fought too much. We were better in bed with each other than living with each other."

The other greenrider wrinkled her nose. "Why's he so angry?" That explained the attitude, at least.

Rorela stared at the cup for a long moment. "I'm really not sure if I should talk about that. He's pretty private about his past."

"Wow." Harki tipped her head to one side to examine Rorela. Rorela usually talked about _everything_, which made her reluctance now unusual. "Something big, then. Maybe don't tell me. I really want to know, though. Deep dark secrets bug me. But." She held up one finger. "I have a big mouth and let's be honest. I'll probably end up blabbing something I shouldn't and get you into trouble."

"Not just that." Rorela gave a wry smile. "I don't want things uncomfortable with you too. You get too close to his vulnerable spots and his temper flares. And sorry I didn't mention it. I honestly didn't think about it. I've not thought about him as weyrmate in so long, its hard to remember that it really happened."

The younger greenrider shrugged with one shoulder. "I'm not mad or anything. Just-- surprised, I guess. What else don't I know?"

"About me?" Rorela suddenly grinned. "Well, I don't really have secrets. All you have to do is ask. Does it bother you that much that you didn't know? I know you're not mad, I just didn't really think about it." She gave a half-smile. "But Ma'din is rocking your pants, right?"

Harki smiled. "He's all right. He's... simple. Uncomplicated." Except for the anger management issues and the secret weyrmating, but that was... different. Not about her. Ma'din didn't ask her for anything, didn't need her, and that was exactly what she wanted. "Unless there's something else I should know?"

Nodding, Rorela agreed. "As long as you just want to bed him, he'll stay that way. There's nothing else that I know of." She eyed Harki and grinned a bit. "You're not gonna fall in love with the man, are you?"

"Love is for chumps," Harki shot back. "If I ever go moon-eyed again, slap me until I regain my senses. Falling in love was the worst thing that ever happened to me."

There was a soft laugh. "Hear hear." She raised her glass in salute. "I'll enjoy slapping you. On the ass."

Harki blew a kiss Rorela's way. "You'll take any excuse, won't you."
