Description: It's the Weyrling Graduation!
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 8, day 7 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentioned: J'darin
Notes: backdated due Clancey's ex-boss. I had to scramble up something when
the orginal plans went down the drain.
G'nir sat on his place at the hight table on the Dining Cavern. Saibra
was sitting next to him, lovely as usual. It was the time for Weyrling
Graduation Feast. Their wing placements had been decided days ago,
although the weyrlings didn't know them yet. He stood up and rapped
the table with a spoon to get everyone's attention. He gave the
signal, and E'naer led the group of weyrlings inside.
G'nir studied them. Only sixteen. Due it's small size, the class was
more close knit than usual. D'ret's death had hit it bad, so bad that
J'darin and he had decided to postpone the graduation. Gave them time
to recover. But now they were ready. He smiled proudly.
"Today, this group of young dragonriders will no longer be weyrlings.
They will receive their wing assignments and their rider's knots,"
G'nir spoke. On cue, a drudge brought the knots and placed them on the
table in front of him.
D'kere stood back and watched the ceremony. It was his first Weyrling
Graduation as a part of the Weyrling Staff. He suspected that as
J'darin's Second he would have to be more involved in the future, but
enjoyed getting to watch and learn this time.
J'kri scooted closer to Paetri and took her hand. He wanted to be in
the same wing with her so they could spend more time together, but he
also knew that might distract him. **I don't know what I want. Good
thing it's not my decision**
D'ale sat in the front at a table with the Cyan leadership and watched
the Weyrlings troop in with approval. He smiled and squeezed Yanley's
hand under the table. Today was an important day.
Yanley squeezed his hand back.
G'nir started to promote the weyrlings, going in an alphabetic order,
starting from A. He called the weyrling forwards, removed his or hers
old knots, gave the new ones and directed him or her to the new wing,
where the Wingleader had the honour of attaching the new knots to
their shoulders.
Saibra watched with a smile as the Weyrleader began promoting the
Weyrlings. She only had a couple of Weyrlings that would be joining
the Queen's Wing this time around, but she knew that she would be more
actively watching this next group of Weyrlings coming through to see
who would be a good fit with the low-altitude Wing.
When the first of the graduates came toward the Cyan table D'ale stood
with K'ran and welcomed the greenrider with a firm handshake and a
smile. "Welcome to Cyan."
Since G'nir was calling names as Weyrleader, P'nal was stand-in Wingleader
for the moment. He welcome the new riders and easily gave them their new
knots
as they joined the Weyrleaders' Wing. He let Rorela take care of
letting them know when and where to report for duty the next day. The
brownrider's dark eyes were
full of memories.
G'nir had gotten down to J-letter. "J'kri, rider of blue Rademerth.
You'll be joining Azure wing. Welcome," he smiled when he declared it
and removed the weyrling knots from his shoulders. Placing the new
ones to his hands, he directed him towards P'nal. The young man showed
lot of promise.
J'kri blinked in surprise. The Weyrleader's Wing? "Th-thank you, sir."
He glanced back at Paetri before heading over to P'nal.
}:Of course we will fly with the Weyrleader. We are the best,:{ Rademerth
said.
Rorela ushered J'kri over with her and gave a bright smile. "Drills
tomorrow evening, wingrider."
Paetri applauded lightly and gave J'kri a wide smile. She was proud of
him; he'd do well in the Weyrleader's wing. She took a slow breath and
waited her turn.
Sh'lua clapped J'kri's back when he walked past him.
The line was shortening fast.
"Paetri, rider of green Camilth!" G'nir called and waited until she
step forward. "You'll be joining Cyan wing, congratulations," he
removed the weyrling knots and placed the new ones to her upturned
hands. There was only two riders left after her.
"Thank you." Paetri took the knots with a smile. She wasn't in J'kri's
wing, but maybe that was for the better. She wouldn't be distracted by
worry over his wellbeing.
This was K'ran's first time with an active part in the graduation
ceremonies and he found he couldn't stop the large smile crossing his
face. What a joy to be standing here and welcoming the new riders!
When the next greenrider came forward, he took the knots from her
hands and gently pinned them to her shoulder.
"Welcome to Cyan, greenrider Paetri. I look forward to flying with you
and Camilth."
"Welcome," D'ale added his congratulatory smile with a firm handshake.
"Rest tonight," he winked. "Drills tomorrow."
Taren watched the young riders took their places on the tables and
wondered how long it would take until one of them was laying on his
surgical table? It was not a happy thought. He drained his tankard in
one go.
Then, after Z'hin, it was over, everyone had been graduated. G'nir
gave a short speech which ended: "Let's toast to our new Wingriders.
Fly well and Safe Skies!"
E'naer discreetly wiped his eyes. Shards, graduations always made him
teary. He felt like proud mother of father, watching his children grow
up and find their own way through life.
