Lanniya

Lanniya

"Well hello there, miss blue eyes!" Eioval smiled his most winning
smile as he sat down at an empty seat besides a new face in the dining
hall. "I don't think I've had the pleasure as of yet. Do you mind if I
enjoy your company for a bit?"

Lanniya looked up, her glass halfway to her mouth before taking a
quick sip and smiling. "Hello." She tilted her head. "No, you haven't
and I don't mind." She offered her hand. "I'm Lanniya."

Eioval took her hand and gave it a firm shake. "Eioval, Journeyman
Harper in profession, artist at heart." He sat down and attacked a
tuber on his plate. "You haven't been here for very long have you? I'm
sure I would have remembered those eyes!"

There was a giggle and a slight blush as Lanniya delicately cut into
her meat roll. "It's nice to meet you. I've only been here for a few
days." She lifted her head. "I'm a Candidate."

"Ooh, a candidate, how lovely," Eioval smiled. "I can see you on a
gorgeous, pastel coloured green. Or perhaps a honey-coloured gold?"

She blinked and then tilted her head. "Well, those are the only two
options for me. As long as I Impress, I don't care what the color is."
She looked away, her eyes going distant. It was one thing to hear all
of the other dragons and quite another to be paired with one that was
just hers. That only she could hear.

"That is good to hear, either would look splendid on you," Eioval
smiled, always concerned with aesthetics. He suddenly cocked his head
curiously as her gaze glazed over suddenly. "You okay, baby girl?"

She blinked, turned her head back to him and shook her head as if
clearing it. The pet name made her smile. "I'm fine. My mind just
wanders sometimes."

"Oh, I certainly cannot fault you for that," Eioval grinned. "I have a
tendency to stare at things for minutes on end if I find them
fascinating enough."

"Well, you're a Harper. Doesn't that happen a lot anyway?"

"Oh yes, and I'm an artist so even more so. But that doesn't mean
other people don't think it's weird," Eioval winked.

"There's nothing wrong with weird." Lanniya smiled. "Weird is interesting."

"It certainly is," Eioval laughed. "I like you, baby girl, you're
going to do just fine here."

"I hope so! Everyone I've met has been wonderful." She picked up a
piece of fruit and ate it, a smile remaining on her mouth as she
swallowed. "Everyone's so nice. Even the dragons are. I already love
it here."

"That's good to hear, little dragonet," Eioval smiled. "Just remember
there are people to be looked out for and situations to be steered
clear of anywhere you go. Even here at River Bluff."

At that, a quizzical look appeared on Lanniya's face. "What do you mean? "

"Just that not everything is sunshine and baby felines, dear," Eioval
placed one hand under his chin looking at her. "You know to steer
clear of the Flightrooms, right?"

Her brow furrowed and her head tilted to the side. "Flightrooms?" A
recent arrival, not everything had been explained to her. She was
still trying to adjust to living at the Weyr and in one place in
contrast to the life in a Trader caravan.

"The rooms where riders go when their dragon has a Mating Flight,"
Eioval replied, wondering how it could be that no one had told her.
"Have someone point it out to you on a map and don't go there. At
least not until you full well understands what happens there."

Her brows rose. "Oh...that's where they go to mate, right? The dragons
explained that one. Sort of." It was a benefit of the Weyr. She could
ask any question to the dragons she wanted answered, but it was often
colored by their perceptions and images, especially if she asked a
green. She'd had to ask them not to send the more...interesting
images. She figured those were private and they were a bit
embarrassing. Her face colored. "I'm not ready for that yet."

"That's what I thought, pup," Eioval nodded, than he blinked in
confusion for a moment as her earlier words registered. "The dragons
explained it?"

"Oh...you didn't know. I thought everyone did by now." Lanniya
grinned, dimples flashing. "I hear them. And no, I'm not crazy and I'm
not light minded. "

"You hear the dragons," Eioval said in wonder. "No, I haven't heard.
That must drive you absolutely mad at times."

She shook her head and laughed lightly. "Oh no. I love it. Besides, I
can always push them to the back of my mind. It's kind of like a buzz
I can ignore, you know? And..." Her eyes glinted merrily, "I can find
out loads of stuff that I probably shouldn't."

"Ooh," Eioval's interest was immediately piqued. "Like what?"

Eyes still twinkling, Lanniya sipped her water. "Oh just little things
that they think are interesting. Greens gossip quite a bit,
apparently." She looked around. "My grandparents would be so mad if
they found out I was listening in."

"It's their job to mind," Eioval laughed. "Got any good gossip then?"

"Well, I heard a bronze talking to a green about someone getting
weyrmated and then another young green talking about how her rider
wouldn't let her into all of her memories."

"Do you know who you're hearing? Do dragons have particular voices
like us?" Eioval asked curiously.

"They do, but I don't know all of them. There's too many and unless
they say their names, or I get to know their voices, I really don't
know. Most dragons kinda sound like their riders. Even the greens with
male riders, just more...girly."

"That's a funny thought," Eioval smiled. "Well, if you get any good
gossip out of it and you feel like sharing..." he trailed off with a
grin. "Otherwise, if there is anything I can help you with, don't
hesitate to ask. It's an adjustment, moving to the Weyr."

"Thank you." Lanniya replied. "Maybe you could draw me some time. No
ones ever done that before."

"I would love that," Eioval smiled as he got up from his seat. "Look
me up sometime when you've got some time off."
