Crayon Awards: Favorite New Male Persona (August 2025)

Physical Description of Persona:
H'yazi is scrawny and malnourished and will look a little younger than his true age for it until he has some meat on his bones. He might have grown taller in another life, but in this one, he is a touch shorter than average. He has tannish skin. He has straight, mahogany brown hair and hazely-brown eyes.

Emotional Description of Persona:
H'yazi is slow to trust in almost every case, and he has a tendency to tell lies even when there is no reason to conceal the truth. In some cases, he has told lies and been told lies so many times that he is not even sure what the truth actually is. He is still pragmatic enough to know when the truth would serve him better than fibs and tall tales. He tries to act mysterious and intriguing, because that has often served to change potential disdain to interest and curiosity in the past. Underneath it all, he only wants someone to genuinely care for him.

History of Persona:
H'yazi does not know his birth name. His parents were Holdless and never married, and his mother died in childbirth. His father quickly took a new partner, and the pair made a living stealing livestock. His father was killed in one such raid, and his stepmother took another partner just as quickly.

These two were the only parents Hayazi could remember, and while they never abandoned him, they treated him more like a tool or at best an accomplice in their criminal enterprises than a son. He was raised as part of the con. When they were not using him to squeeze into spaces they were too big to fit, he was the one who would endear himself to the marks. Make them believe they were innocent. Have pity on them. In every new place, they gave him a new name, and in private, they only ever called him The Boy.

They stayed with Hayarall and Liazi longer than any of the others. For just a little while, The Boy thought they might have actually found a home. His parents did honest work around their cot for over a Turn-- nearly two. The couple never had any children, so they doted on The Boy like his parents never did. So when they woke him in the middle of the night to tell them it was time to rob the couple blind, The Boy tried to warn them, and he and his mother only got away with half of what they had intended to take. His father was caught and imprisoned. The Boy had never received such a beating in his life. His mother never took another partner, and they never pulled such a long con again.

Shortly thereafter, The Boy and his mother were trapped in a flash flood inside the caves where they were sheltering for the winter. The Boy might have been able to help rescue his mother if he had really tried. Maybe. But he did not, and she drowned in the caves while he escaped with the help of a Dragonsfall rider.

The Boy happily took N'vanik up on his offer to house some of the Holdless. Who would not want to get a fresh start where it was warm and sunny, far away from anyone he had ever helped to cheat?

Dragon's Name: Iarlath
Dragon's Age: 0
Dragon's Hatching Date: m10 d15
Dragon's Colour: Blue
Description of Dragon:
Already long-limbed and elegantly-built even as a hatchling, Iarlath will gain an even more striking presence as he grows: his angles sharpening, his movements refining into something almost theatrical, a dragon who turns heads not through size or strength but by sheer magnetism and the quiet command of someone who always seems to know what comes next. His wings are slightly oversized for his frame, giving him a distinctive, gliding flight style that looks more like drifting than flying -- graceful, effortless, and oddly mesmerizing. He has a hide the color of storm-washed slate -- a deep grey-blue that somehow never seems to be overshadowed by brighter, more colorful dragons thanks to Iarlath’s striking contrast of poise and flash in his bearing. He’ll never be the biggest blue in the Weyr, but may be the most _seen_… when he wants to be.

Iarlath is a sleek, silver-tongued blue with a gift for timing -- whether it’s landing a cutting observation, taking command of a bad situation, or making himself just aggravating enough to get noticed. Overconfident to a fault and rarely serious when others wish he would be, he has an irreverent sense of humor that tends to surface at the worst (or most entertaining) possible moment. Cool-headed in crisis and graceful under pressure, Iarlath makes everything look easy -- and makes sure you _know_ it. He’s clever, charismatic, and maddeningly sure of himself, often playing the know-it-all even when he doesn’t quite know it all… yet. He doesn’t provoke to be cruel, but because it’s fun -- and because, more often than not, he _is_ right. Underneath the smirk and showmanship, though, lies a sharp instinct for reading the moment and a deeply rooted belief that he’s meant for something significant -- even if no one else has realized it yet.
