Persona Profile: Dabryn (Inactive)

Writer: Estelle

Name: Dabryn
Age: 53
Birthday: m5 d13
Rank: Hold Resident
Location: Amber Hills Hold
Job: Guard

Physical Description of Persona:
A stocky man of medium height, with dark hair cropped to fit under a helmet and watchful brown eyes, Dabryn is lighter on his feet and more agile than his build might suggest, with an unexpected turn of speed that has come in useful on many occasions. His skin is lightly tanned and weathered from the outdoor life, and bears many small white scars and several larger ones - a result of both his profession and his boyhood experiences as a hunter.

Emotional Description of Persona:
Dabryn is not by any stretch of the imagination a typical 'drill sergeant' or a flamboyant hero of a guard captain; in fact, he is in general softly spoken and recruits soon learn that when he raises his voice, someone's in serious trouble! As a second-in-command, he was methodical and patient if not innovative in his work, but his loyalty to the Hold was unshakeable.

His abrupt promotion to captain after the death of his predecessor put him in a position not entirely of his own choosing, and the series of violent murders in Amethyst Cliff Hold that followed left him doubting his own intelligence and abilities as a leader to keep the people of the Hold safe. The determination to find the one responsible for the deaths is almost as strong as his sense of duty to protect the Lord of the Hold and his family.

Though he has a quiet confidence with his fellow guardsmen, Dabryn is rather shy with the other inhabitants of the Hold, particularly women and those of rank. Over the Turns he has buried himself in his work and until recently was not considered much of a catch by the well-meaning parents and the girls of the Hold.

History of Persona:
Dabryn's family home is a little mountain cothold several hour's ride from Amethyst Cliff Hold proper. The youngest child, he grew up helping his brothers to herd the goats his father kept and hunting in the forested slopes of the mountains, and learned the lie of the land around the main Hold well - a skill which was to prove useful later in life.

The hold being isolated, the little family lived in constant worry that they'd be attacked by one of the bands of lawless men who inhabited the forests in the Interval. The Holdless must have considered the cothold, which was not well off and had a father and three strong sons to protect it, not worth the risk, but the menace of bandits proved influential. Dabryn's eldest brother was to inherit the cot and the second to apprentice as a beastcrafter, but Dabryn himself chose to join Lord Caloundra's guard at the Hold itself at the age of seventeen.

Through diligent work, he rose slowly but steadily through the ranks and was eventually chosen as the Captain's second-in-command in his mid-thirties. Since the Captain himself was a younger man, Dabryn had no thought to ever take over his post since his temperament was more suited to his current position, but when the man was killed with many of his fellow guards in an ambush on the current Lord, Caladyn, he found himself promoted to Captain of a troop reeling from the loss of so many of their comrades and unequipped to deal with the mysterious killer who attacked at a Conclave shortly after and caused the deaths by poisoning of several Lords, Craftmasters and a Weyrwoman.
