Crayon Awards: Most Intriguing Male Persona (November 2007)
Physical Description of Persona:
Tall and lanky, Larstad is stronger than he looks - mainly because he tends to forget the physical limitations of his body. His hair is dark and hasn't dared to recede or go grey, his eyes are brown, and his nose beaky. He is missing the tip of his left pinky (industrial accident) and his arms are covered in burn marks (forge accidents) and a knife scar where he was slashed by a bandit. He looks quite rakish, and sometimes inadvertently terrifies small children.
Emotional Description of Persona:
Larstad is a true eccentric. He is obsessed with knowing how the world works, and for that reason has done a lot of cross-Craft studying - which is why he has never made it past Jr. Joruneyman in the Smithcraft. He is quick-witted and impatient with stupidity and inflexibility, and he tends to make great leaps of logic and get irritated when people aren't able to follow his thought processes. Although a very smart man, his eccentricities mean that he isn't the most popular of people, and there are a great number of folks who simply like to stay out of his way.
History of Persona:
Born into a large family in the Harper Hall, Larstad was often overlooked for his more boisterous siblings by his rather frazzled parents. It was a while before they noticed that their fourth son was more interested in collecting spinners and stones or sticking twigs into machienery than playing with the other children. He learned to read early and had soon outstripped the other children in his Harper classes, but he was completely tone deaf, had no artistic ability, and lacked the patience for the archivist's trade - not Harper material. His parents sent him to the Hall where he _would_ learn how the world worked: the Smith Hall.
There he learnt chemistry, how to read maps, the weather, and the stars; how to build and repair machines, to blow and etch glass, build jewelery, construct locks, and forge iron. He graduated from his apprenticeship at the top of his class, and requested a journeying position rather than staying on to earn his Senior knots the way his Masters would have liked. Upon leaving the Craft Hall, he was lost to them. All of Pern beckoned, and this is when he began studying other Crafts - the Technician's Craft especially.
Larstad's time journeying has not been boring: he has written three books ('On the Nature of Light When Passed Through Various Lenses', 'A Journey Over the Sea of Asov', and 'Essays on The Nature of Knowledge: Being An Attempt to Quanitfy It And Its Implicatons' - only the first two were well recieved, and the last was criticised for being too condiscending and outside of a Smith's area of expertise, and recieved only a small print run of 50 copies), climbed a mountain, outed a professional thief, fought with bandits, was hit by lightning, and nearly drowned. For the past three turns he has been stationed at Amber Hills Hold, and he has started to get restless.
