"It was not the... easiest... flight I have ever won," he admitted, raking a
hand along the stubble on his jawline. "From what I can remember, she fought
it like a wild feline. As soon as it was over and we were cognizant, she
wrapped her clothing about herself and fled from the flight room."
K'reyel made a note, then looked to the rider. "The question I'm about to
ask you might not be the easiest to answer, so please do your best. Did you
do, or say anything that might have made her think you were doing anything
she didn't want to do, after the flight, but before she left."
The brownrider's eyes narrowed a bit as he tried to think back on the
flight. "Let's see, afterwards, as soon as she came around she scrambled
out. I really didn't even have a chance to get out 'Thank you for the
flight' before she'd left."
"Do you think anyone would have seen her leave?" asked K'reyel. He was
beginning to wonder if the reported dishevelled appearance of the greenrider
was down to her hasty departure.
"I honestly have no idea. I didn't think much about it, you know?" he looked
between K'reyel sand Saibra for understanding. "I've had plenty of flights
where the greenrider wasn't interested in hanging around at all and just up
and left. Her behavior didn't strike me as incredibly different than what I
had experienced before."
Saibra couldn't help but wonder if S'gair was horrible between the furs and
that was why he had experienced women rapidly departing his bed in the past.
Still, his prowess in bed, or lack thereof, did not mean he had been
purposefully rough or abusive towards Yasmeane.
"This might also be a difficult question to answer. You said she was
fighting the flight. Do you remember leaving any marks on her as a result of
the that, bruising, scratches maybe? And would you be willing to show a
healer any marks she might have made on you?" asked K'reyel.
"I might have left marks on her," S'gair admitted, looking a little
chagrined. "Not intentionally, mind you." He then pulled open the collar of
his shirt a bit where visible red lines ran down his neck and disappeared
inside his shirt. "And yes, she left some marks."
For the first time, Saibra felt a tiny bit of relief. Relief that there was
proof that D'kere wasn't guilty. She would hate to think her judgement so
poor in Weyrlingmasters and staff that she might hire someone who would take
advantage of another rider. That still left a question, however.... Did
Yasmeane truly believe that D'kere had been the one to leave the marks on
her? Or was she simply confusing her verbal argument with D'kere for the
physical fight she'd had during her mating flight? Or worse, was Yasmeane
capable of knowing that D'kere hadn't harmed her and wanted to accuse him of
it anyway?
"Is there anything else that you think we need to know?" K'reyel asked. "It
doesn't matter how small, or innocuous that you think it might be."
S'gair shook his head, wondering if he was in trouble and what exactly the
young greenrider had been saying to the Weyrleaders.
"Thank you, S'gair." Saibra gave a nod, dismissing the brownrider. "Well?"
she asked, turning to her Weyrleader. "What do you think?"
"I think," he said after a moment. "I think S'gair wasn't the best flight
partner for a first rising, and I don't think that D'kere touched her
afterwards."
"Agreed," Saibra said quickly. "Now we have only left to determine if
Yasmeane is blaming D'kere on purpose, or if she's just confused. Let's call
her back in and let her know what we've discovered and see how she reacts."
Chioneth once again reached out and in a moment the door was opening and the greenrider in question was once again in the hot seat.
"Yasmeane, the Weyrleader and I have spoken with everyone involved and
there's something we feel like needs to be clarified. Your flight with
S'gair. What do you remember of it?"
Yasmeane's brows furrowed, eyes darting back and forth between K'reyel and
Saibra. "S'gair?" A man's face briefly flashed in her mind and she tilted
her head as she rubbed at her temples. Why did the name bring a face with
it? She didn't know a S'gair, did she?
"I think I've come to a decision," K'reyel began after clearing his throat.
"I don't believe this was rape. I think you have had a rough flight, but
that was no excuse for your accusation afterwards. So, Yasmeane, I'm
assigning you back to the Weyrling wing for the immediate future. You need
to really understand what it means to be a dragonrider and all that it
entails, especially flights, that would be the perfect place for you to
receive some extra training. I'm also going to require you to have a minimum
of six sessions with a mindhealer, more if they deem it necessary, and I
will be asking them to tell me when they think you are fit to fly fall. Do
you understand?"
Saibra silently surveyed the greenrider's response as the Weyrleader gave
his decision. A mixture of confusion and panic crossed Yasmeane's face, but
she managed to swallow it down.
"Yes, sir," she said with a duck of her head.
"You are dismissed, Yasmeane. And make sure to follow up with Master
Jadirah, should your injuries require it." Saibra instructed.
Without saying anything else to the Weyrleaders, Yasmeane hurried from the
room. **Ground Isaroth and call D'kere back in,** the Weyrwoman passed to
her gold.
D'kere's heart pounded in his throat as he entered the conference room
again, knowing that the Weyrleaders had reached a decision.
"D'kere," Saibra said as the Weyrlingmaster's Second took a seat, "we have
spoken with all parties involved and we have determined that Yasmeane's
accusation stems from a rough first mating flight. We found nothing
inappropriate about your decisions or actions regarding Yasmeane's Weyrling
training."
An exhale of relief escaped D'kere's lips as his eyes slipped closed for a
moment. His insides felt icy. When he reopened his eyes, there was a glint
in them. "Thank you, Weyrwoman, Weyrleader. I appreciate your thoroughness
and I hope you will understand and accept my resignation from the
Weyrlingmaster's Second position."
The Weyrwoman's mouth dropped open in surprise. "Let's not be hasty, D'kere.
This is no reason to abandon your position. You've been working with the
Weyrling's for Turns now, back to Weyrlingmaster J'darin."
The bronzerider shook his head, his lips pressed firmly together. "The
decision is already made, I'm afraid. I am requesting to be placed back in
the fighting Wings." He looked at the Weyrleader.
"It is your decision, and I think that we have to respect it," K'reyel said
after a moment. "But don't blame yourself for one girl's lack of judgement.
The many more weyrlings who've graduated to the wings show what you can do."
"I'll stay on until the end of the month while you look for a replacement." D'kere said with a respectful nod before standing. "Now if you'll excuse me, Weyrleaders. I'd like to go see my weyrmate."
