Vandor

Vandor

It was beautiful. It had always been beautiful. After for years away, it was the most beautiful thing Vandor had laid his eyes upon. Dolphin Cove Weyr appeared, glimmering and shining in the bright morning sunlight, its golden rays turning to molten silver upon the surface of the water both inside and outside of its borders. Although having just come from /between/, the chill of the empty void was all but forgotten at the sight of home shimmering beneath, and he appreciated the dragonrider easing his way down rather than dropping quickly, which afforded Vandor a longer view of the scenery. As the blue executed a perfect landing, the man undid the straps that held him securely upon the dragon’s back.

Four turns had passed since he accepted the request of the Northern Healer Hall for Southern Healers to come assist during a time of shortage. He had expected to be there one, perhaps two, but the increased demand was not filled as quickly as he had hoped. Now, however, he was free to return, and he was grateful that he could do so where his heart belonged. Dolphin Cove had not birthed him, for the Earth quake had destroyed the one that had, but in the wake of the chaos and sorrow, the new Weyr had welcomed all who suffered the consequences of the tragedy. Having lived most of his life there, the past four years had only confirmed he was content to remain there for the rest of it.

Sliding to the ground, Vandor paused, one hand resting against the brilliant sky blue hide as he inhaled deeply, the sting of the salt mixed with the sweet and spiciness of the dragons that inhabited the place. How he had missed her! Giving a pat to the creature, the blue swung his head around and crooned softly, appreciative, and Vandor stepped forward to scritch the animal’s eyeridge.

“Thank you for the ride, K’wan.” Dark eyes slid across to the rider as he gave one last pat to the dragon before moving back to accept the two packs that had been snugly secured to the harness.

“Not a problem. I’ve got a cousin I’ve been wanting to visit, so it was a good excuse.” The young man grinned and gave a two fingered salute, to which Vandor responded with a nod. Turning upon his heel, the made made his way across the sand. Boots sank into the soft ground beneath, a sensation that brought another wave of nostalgia. But nostalgia had turned into reality.

In the North, deep rich forests dotted the landscape, and in the winter, heavy blankets of snow fell upon the land. Although the autumn had brought with it an amazing array of fiery colours that spread their visual heat over miles upon miles of land, blazing across as far as the eye could see, and held its own beauty, its own captivation, still nothing could replace Dolphin Cove with it's cerulean waters and and silver peaks. Every rise and fall of the volcano that had once spewed fire, but now provided a home for the dragons, their riders, and all who resided there was familiar, and etched in his memory forever.

Yes, there were changes. Faces he did not recognize dotted the landscape, dragons from hatchings over the last four turns lounged at the lake, children who would have been but babies or toddlers barely able to walk ran past him, their laughter a high melody mixed with the underscore of the waves that crashed against the shore, punctuated by the rhythm of the calls from the great beasts that protected all from the threat of Thread. Taking another deep breath, Vandor picked up his pace as he aimed for the entrance of the Weyr proper, eager to get settled. He had finally returned to Dolphin Cove Weyr. He had finally returned home.
