Description: T'kala asks questions about frist flights.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 11, day 2 of Turn 3

"Sir? I wanted to ask you about our flights coming up." T'kala told the weyrlingmaster after class.

"Of course T'kala," replied the Weyrlingmaster. "Follow me to my office and we can talk about it."

"I'm a little nervous. I mean I know Dag's ready but am I?"

"It's normal to be nervous," said J'an gently. Plenty of good riders were petrified their first time in the air, and they seemed to be the ones who went on to become the strongest links in the wings. The cocly, overconfident ones tended to panic more, or so it seemed.

"Is there anything I can do? Before the flights?" he asked.

"Get a good night's sleep, and eat well."

T'kala nodded, "It gets eaiser doesn't it?" he asked.

"It does," replied J'an. "Once you get used to it, you'll wonder how you ever lived without the sensation."

T'kala smiled. "Dag says I shouldn't worry bacuse I made the straps."

"That's how you know they will keep you safe. It's one way of building the trust in yourself and your equipment."

"What was your frist flight like?"

"Scary, but worth every minute." J'an smiled at the memory. Alylth had been so sure of himslef, so sure that they would just step up that ramp, and jump off making that short first flight together. His heart had been in his mouth, it had been all to brief, over too soon. But then they repeated the experience, and again a third time to prove it was not a fluke.

"You know how it will work?" asked J'an.

"we use the ramp, no ground take offs yet right?"

"That's right, and you will do it more than once, just to prove to both you and him that you really can do it."

The idea of mutiply flights at one time made his smile. At last he and Dagreth would be in the air where they belonged.

"Once you've done that a few times, we'll build it up gently until you'll find that you are flying further and further each day."

"Yes sir!"

That sounded so enthusiastic, just what a Weyrlingmaster wanted in his charges. "Don't rush, there is a reason that flying is prohibited until both of you are ready."

"We won't. I don't want Dag to get hurt."

"And he won't be if you listen to us."

It seemed basic to T'kala, he's no more ignor the weyrlingmaster than he would his father.

"Then I'll see you in the morning for classes?"

"Of course sir." He'd only missed one class so far, he'd had a cold.

"Go and enjoy the rest of the day, after you've completed your chores."

"Thank you for your help sir." T'kala said cheerfully."

"Not at all T'kala."
