"Nice to see you Renner," Seori said, smiling at the man seated in front of her. "I always look forward to these meetings."
"Me too." Renner tried to smile at the Hallmaster, but it came out more as a grimace. He definitely did _not_ look forward to meeting with her.
She ignored his facial expression, and spoke as pleasantly as she could. "Where should we start? Do you have any news?"
"No, not really. Classes are going well. I haven't had much outside classes lately since the project Zanie and I were working on together was stopped." Renner could understand not wanting to intrude on the Weyr after the terrible accident that befell them, but he did miss the time away from the Hall.
"Yes, well, as to that, I've been in contact with the Weyr recently, and they've assured me that they will shortly be able to provide us with the means to resume your project. A new rider will be assigned, and you two can pick up where you left off."
Well, at least that was good news! "I understand. I'll be ready as soon as you give the word."
"Good." Seori was pleased that he seemed to enjoy this project. "I need to speak with Zanie as well, before we'll be ready, but it should be soon. I'm glad that you're ready." Seori left a pause, seeing if Renner might feel like volunteering anything. Renner did not. He already had to volunteer more information than he was comfortable with at the mindhealer's room. The journeyman knew that this was what the Hallmaster truly wanted to know about, and he dreaded discussing it.
"So." Seori paused again briefly. They were reaching the hard part. It always felt like pulling teeth with Renner. "How are you feeling these days?" she asked, going in gently.
He shrugged. "All right, I guess. Maybe better."
"You're noticing progress, then?"
"Things aren't worse at least," he mumbled. Renner hated talking about it all. It just reminded him that things were not right, and he desperately just wanted to be the way he used to be. "The nightmares aren't so bad I think."
"Good." Seori's face broke into a smile. She knew that working with Renner meant looking at the long-term, so she tried to make the best of any progress. "Have you found anything in particular to be helpful? Any specific places or activities?"
Renner let out a long sigh as he considered the question. "Well, I really liked going out with Zanie to Topaz Sea Hold. It was just good to get out of the Hall for a while."
"Do you think a longer-term assignment might do you good? Or do you think being mainly at the Hall with brief away periods has been beneficial?" "I'm not sure," Renner replied honestly. "It's nice to be around people sometimes, but then others I just can't wait to get away."
"Okay, well, we'll just keep it like it's been then, shall we?" Seori smiled at him again, knowing how much he'd rather be elsewhere. "I'll talk to Zanie as soon as I can, and let you know when I've got it worked out."
Renner actually smiled. "Thank you, Hallmaster. I'll be waiting."
"You're welcome. Have a good day Renner." Seori watched him leave, then shuffled around until she found his file. She smiled a bit sadly, looking over her past notes. Reaching the end, she began to write, "I got a true smile today..."
