A Stitching Savior in the Weyr Labyrinth

Writers: Ambrosia, April
Date Posted: 12th April 2008

Characters: M'yex, Aryn
Description: M'yex takes a moment alone as his green sleeps and is found by a rather lost Aryn.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 9, day 2 of Turn 4

M'yex sat alone. He had nearly finished a pair of mittens he had been working on. He was spending his free time working on some of his favorite projects. Enyth was sleeping. He had never realized how lonely it could be when she slept. He glanced down at the mitten in his hand. He had been stitching a flower on the back of it. A few more stitches and they were perfect. He glanced around the room. It was a pretty empty room. He had found it during his exploration of the weyr.

Shells, where could she have lost it? Aryn's glow was getting dim, and she still couldn't find the hide with the list of fabric-dying materials she'd been carrying when she took a 'short-cut' through the caverns. Just when she most needed to make a good, responsible impression with her teachers! She saw a faint beam of light up ahead, and she hastened towards it.
Even if she didn't find the sharding hide, it would be even worse to be lost among the seldom-used rooms of the weyr labyrinth.

When she reached the entrance, she saw a lone towheaded boy - a young man, really - sitting calmly on the floor, industriously intent on whatever it was he was working on. He looked vaguely familiar. She shuffled her feet as she drew near, trying to draw his attention gently so as not to startle him. As she approached him, she saw the needle and thread in his hand, and the quite intricate design he was embroidering.

Aryn cleared her throat. "Hey there, that's an amazing pattern!
It's about as fancy as Journeyman Tolmak's work - way above my level anyway! What a nice quiet place to work you've got here.
I'm Aryn, by the way - Sienna Wing. Viyanth's my green." She thought of extending her hand, but didn't want to draw his hands from his work. "I think I might know you from somewhere... but by the looks of that, surely not from my Apprentice classes!
I'm still just a Junior... not sure tailoring's really my forte," she added humbly.

M'yex smiled. "I'm still an apprentice. I'm M'yex and my little green is Enyth. I used to be Mayex now I am M'yex." He glanced down at his finished mittens. "Would you like them? I wasn't making them for anyone special."

"Oh wow, that's so generous of you!" Aryn blushed from surprise.
"Gosh - I'd love them, actually - if you're sure! I'm sure you could probably sell them for good marks, 'cuz they're really gorgeous, and the quality is superb. So is knitting your specialty, or embroidery?"

"It's alright I have several other pairs that I've finished and are just sitting in the barracks." He smiled as he handed them to her. "I do the embroidery. I have a knack for it. I was thinking of making it a specialty but I never got to finish my apprenticeship. Enyth came along and changed my plans for me.
Now I just do it in my spare time."

"That's quite a hobby! I mean, even though I spend my 'spare time' with the weavercraft, I never seem to really turn out anything worthwhile. For me, Viyanth came first - saved me from a life of toil and childbearing, near as I can figure it. Never could really see myself as a true 'crafter', less'n it had something to do with beasts." She flashed a quick grin. "But I sure can appreciate good artistry! Thank you!"

A light clicked on in Aryn's so-recently panic-fuzzed brain.
"Hey, so are you one of the new Weyrlings then? It's amazing you have_any_ spare time at all! Enyth, huh - greens are the best you know," she gave a conspiratory wink. "So is she past the stage yet where she's a stomach with wings, or is she starting to communicate more than 'Food, now!' and 'Itchy, bath please' and 'So sleepy! How far to our weyr?'" Aryn's smile shone fondly, as she recalled her and Vi's early conversations.

"Oh, she asks all those questions. Enyth likes to put it this way, 'May I go to bed now.' 'I have an itch, please scratch it.' and 'May I eat now.'" He chuckled. "She likes to watch me stitch sometimes. She thinks it's intresting to see what emerges from all those colored strings."

Aryn giggled approvingly. "Wow, she's polite - and with an eye for beauty, too! Guess that just reinforces what I already knew about my Vi... she's a little, um, impatient, sometimes. And she doesn't hesitate to convey what she thinks, in no uncertain terms! 'A course, I suppose we're a match in that, too," she admitted.
"But we're working on it... now that we have another goal to work towards, in addition to fighting Thread, I think it will help us see the virtue of patience and gentleness."

"I'm sure she will get it. It's intresting to see just how different each dragon is." he smiled softly. He could feel Enyth waking. She called for him with curiosity. **I am talking with another rider. Are you well?**

}: I itch a little. Do you think she will mind if you come oil me now?:{ He chuckled.

"My dear Enyth has wakened and asked if you would mind if I return to her. She itches and requests an oiling."

"Oh, by all means! It's so important to keep their hides well-oiled while they're growing so fast, and I'd never want to keep you from your lifemate when she needs you. Especially since she asked so nicely!"

**You could learn something from Enyth's considerate demeanor, dear Vi!**

Aryn could sense Viyanth's smugness and a touch of indignancy in her reply. }: What for? You shall do what I require anyway - it's only right a rider attends to her dragon when she calls :{ Rolling her eyes, Aryn groaned for comic effect. "M'yex, do cultivate that delicate sensitivity of Enyth's. My Vi's nearly as haughty as a gold!" she laughed.

Pausing, she looked down disconsolately at her now completely lifeless glow. "Um, there's one more thing though, I must ask of you...
do you have an extra glow? I was looking for a scroll I lost as I took a shortcut through the caverns - that's how I found you! But I was beginning to fear I'd be wandering about lost in the dark for the rest of my Turns, since my glow was about out... is out, now. Or otherwise, could I perhaps follow you back to civilization?"

"Oh, so this belongs to you?" He held up a small scroll he had found. "I was going to ask Enyth to ask around when she woke.
Guess she won't have to now." He handed it over. "And of course I'll help you find your way out. My glow is plenty bright for both of us." He smiled.

Aryn's face lit up and she gave M'yex a spontaneous hug. "M'yex you're my savior! Now I owe you two! Or even three... so let's get you back to your poor itchy girl. Can I help you carry anything?"

"That's alright it all fits in the various pockets I've put in my tunic." He quickly put it all away. "Shall we?"
