"How many bags is that?" Ivane looked at the pile that she had put together and almost despaired. Could a dragon carry so much? Perhaps she shouldn't have taken so much. Her parents would have been willing to store some of their things until they were able to retrieve them. Of course, a lot of it were things for Kailvan. And, of course, there were some baby things that she just couldn't bear to part with. Perhaps she should have stored those.
"I think I lost count," joked her husband. "Do we really need all these toys?"
"Actually, that bag is being given away." Ivane moved over and took one small bag off of the pile. "But the rest...well, yes. Kailvan plays with all of them and I just know if I took any of those away he would ask for them."
"And the cooking things?" Kailatan held up a pot. ""Everyone eats together in the Weyr, I asked about that."
"Everyone?" Ivane blinked, looking at the bags, then at her husband, then at the bags again. "I don't cook anymore?"
"They have kitchens like at the hall for the apprentices dining room, but bigger. Even the Weyrwoman and Weyrleader eat there."
"But what if I want to cook for you?" Not cook? It was an odd thought.
"I don't think we have a kitchen in the rooms they've assigned us."
The idea that she wouldn't have to cook seemed to throw her off, but Ivane moved through the luggage until she came to where she had packed her cooking items and set it to the side. "I guess I'll give those to my mom." They were supposed to come over soon anyway.
"And I don't think we need winter clothing either, it's by the sea.
Kailvan will love it."
Ivane gave her husband a doubtful look, but pulled out two more bags and set them to the side. "Are you sure? That certainly cuts down on them but...I hope we're not leaving behind anything we'll need."
"We can always send for it," he reminded her.
"True." And going by dragon did make things quicker. "My parents should be here in a few minutes. When did the rider say she was coming?"
"Should be anytime now." He lifted a hand to shade his eyes as he looked to the skies. "There," he said pointing. "I can see something over there."
Ivane squinted, trying to see what her husband saw. She didn't have to look long, for a dark form was becoming larger. Why hadn't she just come from /between/ closer? Maybe they were too close. "I wonder where my parents are..." Ivane said softly after a moment, looking about.
"I think I hear them," Kailatan turnedto confirm that supposition, "Yes, they're coming."
Ivane turned, the brightened as two figures appeared in sight and headed straight for them. She lifted her arm and waved enthusiastically and turned to look back to the dragon who was drawing nearer.
The dragon spiraled into a landing, her rider swiftly unstrapping and dismounting.
"Journeyman Kailatan?" he called.
Kailatan waved to the rider. "That's me."
Ivane flashed the rider a smile. "I'll go get Kailvan." She turned and made her way back inside the cot, stopping to greet her parents and disappeared inside. A few minutes later, they came out, the sleepy toddler was placed upon Krissiana's shoulder, head tipped over, eyes closed.
Ivalek and Ivane's mother walked alongside their daughter as they reapproached Kailatan and the dragon. Her eyes went over the bags, half of them already secured on the dragon. "Are you all right taking these?"
Ivane asked, indicating the bags she had pulled aside.
Krissiana nodded. "Certainly. We'll store them for you until you get settled. Just let us know if you want us to send them."
Ivalek remained silent, gaze darting from his daughter, to Kailatan, to the bags, then to the dragon.
"I'll look after them both, I promise," Kailatan said to his parents by marriage. "They're my life, you know that."
The Master gave Kailatan a smile and nodded. "I'm sure you will."
"Is that everything?" Ivane asked as she looked at the bags that she had set aside to make sure she hadn't pulled something out that she needed.
The rider was securing the last bag as she spoke and she looked to her husband, then her parents.
"I think so, are you ready?"
"Yes." Ivane turned to her parents, giving them hugs in turn, then carefully taking the sleeping boy from her mother's arms, the child wrapped against the chill he would face from /between/. He barely stirred as she moved him. "Let's go."
