Location: River Bluff Weyr

He knew what that sound meant, people in the Weyr had been quick to
point out that a distinctive hum would fill the air, resonating
throughout the rooms. People were getting busy, and today, his wife
would take her chance. He knew the chances were slim that she would
leave the sands a weyrling, after all, she had to be about the oldest
candidate standing, and surely the dragons would pick someone younger
who could be with them for longer.
So it was with mixed feelings that he took his seat in the stands,
Kailvan on his lap. "Mama will be out there soon," he said. "You'll
be able to wave to her, remember she said she'd wave to us."
It wasn't long before the candidates began to enter, some with their
expressions serious and guarded, as if they had been through this
before only to be disappointed and didn't want to get too excited lest
they be disappointed again. Most, however, had their features lifted
in eagerness and anticipation. Ivane was one of these. Nervous, but
excited, she fairly burst when she saw the sands, but her attention so
wandered to the stands as she looked for her husband and child among
the spectators.
She couldn't keep her attention there for too long lest she run into a
fellow candidate, but once they stopped, she was free to let her gaze
roam about, searching for them. At last she found them and she lifted
her hand and waved.
"See!" Kailatan pointed, watching as the boy followed his finger. "Mama
waved to us."
"Mama," called out the little one.
Ivane's attention was divided between the eggs, some of which had
started to move and her husband and child. Everytime she turned to
them, she would wave. Then she would look back to the eggs, search
for cracks among any of them, then wait to see what had hatched before
looking back to her family. Doubts began to spring up in her mind.
should she have stood? Perhaps she shouldn't have. Kailatan had let
her but she had a feeling he wasn't too keen on this either. What
about her son? One egg hatched, then another and the woman kept
turning her attention between sands and stands.
Bronze, brown and blue dragons emerged, Kailatan was relieved to see
that. not many greens so far. If it carried on this way, he'd be
holding his wife in his arms again tonight.
One by one the eggs cracked, broke open, and out tumbled another
dragon. More greens began to emerge, but they headed for other
candidates. Soon, it was down to only three. One cracked and another
green fell to the sands, shiny with goo. She started to head toward
the candidates, veering to the left of Ivane. The young woman turned
and waved to her husband and child once more when she felt something
touch her. It wasn't a physical touch, but something much more than
that. There was a presence. Ivane turned and found herself staring
into the whirling eyes of the dragon that had just emerged but she had
been sure was heading to someone else. Her hide was a pale, pale
green, like young jade that hasn't grown into its colour. There was a
ripple to her hide of a golden, or perhaps bronze hue, like a trick of
the light. The creature stared at her, and she at the dragon for a
few long moments before Ivane finally heard a voice inside her head.
}:I am Jilith.:{
Ivane let out a long breath, realising all of a sudden that she had
started holding it when she had first felt that mental touch upon her
own. **Jilith...** Tentatively, Ivane reached out and stroked the
muzzle and the dragon jutted her head forward so that her hand was
forced to the eyeridges. The young woman's lips cracked upward in
delight and she looked back to husband and child, face lit up, eyes
shining.
"Mama got dwagon!" called out Kailvan happily. The toddler was unaware
of what was going through his father's mind. How could this have
happened, what had ever possessed that dragon to chose his wife? He'd
been so sure that it wasn't going to be and that they'd still be
together as they had been. But now... No he could only look on
helplessly as Ivane left the sands with a green dragon.
