Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 10, day 15 of Turn 4
"Isn't she beautiful?" Ivane's eyes were lit with a strange light as
she turned them upon her husband. She lowered herself to gather her
son in her arms and hug him, then took one of her husband's
hands. "Come meet her! Her name is Jilith!"
Kailatan hoped he didn't show the slight reluctance he was feeling. It was
strange, this was his wife, but not his wife any more. The harpers had been
helpful on that point, explaining that their marriage would be assumed to be
over, dissolved by the bond of Impression. "She is," he managed to say.
The dragon in question was asleep, curled up in a corner and snoozing away
without any idea of the conflict that was going on in Kailatan's heart.
Ivane, enraptured by the new sensation, by the new purpose in her life, was
blind to it as well. "Oh darling...I wish I could describe this to you.
It's so wonderful. I can't get over it. I honestly had no idea truly what
it mean to impress!"
"I'm sure it is wonderful," he said, trying to keep his voice light. Now
wasn't the time or place to talk about this, not with Kailvan around. All
he'd done for the past few days was ask after his mother. He was too young
to understand why she couldn't live with them.
"Dwagon?" asked the little boy as he saw the sleeping green.
"Yes, darling." Ivane crouched down so that Kailvan could reach out and
touched the smooth hide. "Isn't she pretty?" She set him down and Rillith
stirred, opening one eye. She made a sound that was akin to a purr as the
boy began to pat her head in an effort to pet her.
Ivane turned to her love and encircled him with her arms. "I miss you so.
I can't wait for training to be over so we can be together again."
"I, I miss you too," he wanted to hold her, to kiss her, but the harpers had
been insistent that the dragon was too young, that they had to be careful.
And he'd been counselled to use that time to decide what he wanted to do.
Things were so different now, and Ivane was not yet in a position to decide
anything until Jilith was old enough to understand that. "We'll be able to
talk about that later."
"Talk about what?" Ivane pulled back, confusion marring her features.
"What's there to talk about?"
"Haven't they talked to you yet? About how things are different for us now?"
"Yes, but...that doesn't mean we can't be together." Ivane reached up to
caress Kailatan's cheek. "When training is over, we'll all be together
again. I'm looking forward to that."
He took a step back, "You need to watch out for her," he commented. "They
told me she shouldn't get upset."
"Kail, I know what our limits are. They've made that quite clear and you
know I wouldn't do anything to jeopardize her." Ivane moved forward and
took Kailatan's hand. "I know what we can and can not do. She's not upset
and I'll not do anything to make her upset." Indeed, if the dragon was
upset, she was hiding it quite well. Kailtan was happily climbing upon the
dragonet, clinging to her neck and all Jilith did was sit there save to
occasionally turn her head to, perhaps, give him a better handhold or to
nuzzle him, which caused a delightful squeal.
"Perhaps, perhaps I should let you go and see to her, come back another
time?"
"No, this is my free time. She's fine and I'm fine." Ivane smiled. "And
we will all be fine. Once training is over, we can be together once again.
Come on, you haven't really officially met her yet." The young woman
turned, tugging her husband toward the dragonet who seemed amused at the
child clamboring over her.
"I haven't, have I," he admitted at last.
"And now you have the opportunity." She dragged him over to the creature
who turned away from their son to set her colourful eyes upon her lifemate's
love. "Kailatan, this is Jilith. Jilith, this is Kailatan." The tiny
dragon crooned softly, then butted her head against the man's free hand.
"Hello," he said through lack of anything else to say. "You look after her,
understand?"
The green turned so that one whirling eye regarded the man and then she once
again butted against him. Ivane laughed softly. "She said not to worry and
she wants you to scratch behind her right eyeridge."
Kailatan did just that, wondering just how things could work out.
