"I hate him!" Ivane entered what used to be their quarters that was now
shared only by Kailatan and Kailvan. She kept her voice low to keep their
son from hearing and waking. She slid inside the room and plopped down upon
a chair, her face read. "I'm sorry I missed time with you today, but my
free time was taken away from me, sharding Weyrlingmaster second!"

"What happened?" It seemed an inadequate question, but one that invited an
explanation.

"M'galec." Ivane seethed, hands clenched into fists and digging into her
thighs. "He thinks I'm silly for missing my family. He doesn't care at
all."

"I'm sure it's not like that," began Kailatan, then he saw Ivane's face.
"He's really got to you."

"He's an uncaring bronzerider who thinks he's better than anyone else."
Ivane looked up at her husband, eyes smoldering. "He doesn't know what it's
like at all and he doesn't care!"

"He is the one in charge though," a thought crossed his mind. "Does he know
you are here?"

"No, he doesn't." Ivane shook her head. "I wasn't about to let him keep me
from seeing you at _all_!"

"Maybe you should slip back before he knows you are gone?" It wasn't that he
didn't want to see her, it was more concerns that she'd be stopped from
seeing Kailvan, which would distress all of them.

"I will, I wasn't going to stay too long. I just couldn't bear going a day
without seeing you." Ivane stood and turned. "I'll just peek in on Kailvan
for a moment."

"I've only just got him down for the night, so be careful. He won't
understand why you can't stay."

"I know." Ivane's features fell at that thought. "But it won't be like
that forever." With that, she slipped away to check on her son. A few
moments later, she returned. "He's sleeping soundly." The young woman
sighed. "I should probably go. I don't want to get into any _more_
trouble."

"When will you be off these restrictions?"

"Well, training ends in five and a half months." Ivane sighed. It seemed
like forever. She wasn't going to do anything to rush Jilith, but she did
wish things weren't so strict. "As for the punishment, tonight and
tomorrow. Oh he's such a wherry!"

"Wherry or not you should go back."

"I will. I don't want to lose any more time with you than I already have."
Ivane took Kailatan's hand and squeezed it. "I'll see you at lunch
tomorrow, in the dining hall?"

"If I'm not called away on duty I'll be there."

"Just let me know." Ivane squeezed his hand once more and dared to give him
a peck upon the cheek. "Til tomorrow, my love." With a smile to him, she
turned and hurried out and back to the barracks before anyone would notice
her missing.
