Location: River Bluff Weyr

"Hello love!" Ivane beamed at her son and her husband and gathered the
boy in her arms just before she squeezed all the air out of Kailatan.
"Oh I miss you two so much! Are you going to help me bath and oil
Jilith today?"
"Maybe Kailvan will," he said slowly as he watched her with the boy.
"I'm not sure how long it is before I have to get him back to the nice
foster mother who offered to look after him later."
The smile faded from Ivane's face. "What? But I thought you had the
day off...it's a rest day!"
"Not tomorrow and he needs to get used to her, so she offered to take
him for a while this afternoon," explained Kailatan. "He wasn't happy
with the first foster mother, so we're trying another one."
How did other greenriders do it? Ivane sighed softly. "I wish you
hadn't. Rest days are supposed to be our days together as a family."
Her time was so precious and now they had less than usual.
"It's only for today," he reassured her. "With luck, he'll like this
one and be happy with her."
"Oh I hope so." Ivane gathered her son into her arms and held him
tight. "Come on. We can at least get her bathed before you have to
go." She paused and looked to her husband. "You're going to come
back, right?"
"I'll stay with him a little while just to make sure he settles, but we
can at least get dinner later."
"That will be wonderful." Ivane beamed and kissed her son on the
cheek, then let him go as the child was squirming mightily to get to
the green dragon.
Jilith had grown quite a bit, more in length than bulk. Her slender
form was so beautiful to Ivane, the most beautiful of any of the
dragons, gold or green. She motioned to the bucket. "Come on, let's
get started. She'll be shining like polished jade once we're
through!"
"Kailvan!" The toddler was trying to climb onto the green. "Ask mama if
that's okay first."
"It's okay. Be careful of her wings, darling." Ivane moved over to
carefully pick her son from her dragon and place him back again a bit
closer to her head. Jilith's eyes whirred happily. "Here, why don't
you help me scrub her, hm?"
"You remember how don't you Kailvan," Kailatan said with a smile for
his son. "Let me get this wet for you, then scrub away, but let mama
tell you when to stop okay?"
"Kay." The boy clamboured down from his perch upon the small dragon
and then took the sponge that his father handed to him. Ivane nudged
him over to Jilith's side and took his hand, showing him how to rub
the hide gently, firmly, her hand guiding his in circles. After a
moment, Ivane stood back to let Kailvan do it by himself and she
grinned over at her beloved.
"I think he's got the hang of it at last," commented Kailatan.
"That he does indeed." Ivane giggled softly. "Maybe I should just let
him bathe all of her all by himself."
"That might be alright when she's this size..."
"I was just teasing dear. Come on." Ivane picked up a cloth and flung it
at him playfully. "Let's give him a hand."
"Oww!" he excalimed in mock anger. "You got me!"
"You'd better come help us or you'll get more than just that! And next
time, I'll get you in the face!" Ivane laughed, taking a cloth for herself
and drawing close to her lifemate.
Maybe this could work, thought the mason. Or maybe when the dragon was old
enough to fly things would be different. Greens rose, he'd seen it in the
short time they'd been at the weyr and he now knew what it led to. Would
that change things between them he wondered as he bent to his task.
