"Hey Aryn!" Toriat said, having caught sight of his sister. He could swear she was purposely avoiding him lately. Or maybe it only seemed so because he needed to talk to her about something specific.
"Tor?" she said, turning to confirm it was her brother, bearing down on her. **I guess theres no escape** she thought, there couldn't be any excuse, even the real reason of the fact she was quite hungry after a morning of dragon care, chores and classes.
Toriat caught up with Aryn and caught her by the shoulders. "Hey sis, have lunch with me. I've been remiss in my brotherly duties."
She sighed and walked along. "And what if I said you were doing a _fine_ job, brother of mine?"
"don't humor me Aryn," Toriat said with a bit of a glare. It was ineffective though since he had to glare _up_. He decided to wait until they were seated to continue speaking.
"Now Aryn, I know there might be some, discomfort between each other since, since... you've impressed, but I really thought you'd still, talk to me, about, certain things at least."
Aryn's eyebrows raised in puzzlement. Toriat sometimes had a hard time actually spitting out what he meant. "Well, what would you like to know Tor?" she asked, quite annoyed. **You know there are a few thing you certainly don't share with me...**
"Well, I've heard, and seen actually. I thought Impressing means you'd stop such associations." He was babbling, he knew it, but talking about men with anyone, let along his sister wasn't easy.
"Excuse me Toriat," Even thought she was expecting this line of discussion, she was still horribly offended and angered. "I'm not going to shut myself away for months just because I have to be careful. Yes I am always cognizant of Viyanth's feelings, more then you would _ever_ know and I _never_ cross-"
"Shhh!" Toriat said, trying to shush his sister. "don't make a scene, I'm not questioning _your_ judgement. I just want you to be careful... men in the weyr, they have different values. And while women have much more Independence, that means some men don't give them, the respect they deserve. Especially..." Toriat paused.
"...Birigundi. I'm sure I don't have to tell you his reputation."
At that Aryn shot up out of her seat. "I can't believe you!" She began walking away. "How dare you suggest One, I can't handle myself around a man, and Two that Birigundi is what, what do you think, out of control?" She was further away, when she turned and hissed "just because your confused about your own lack-of-sex-life."
**Thats not quite true,** Toriat thought, blushing horribly. But he yelled back "You don't get to walk away, get back!" Toriat said, charging after her so he wouldn't have to yell. "My life is not something you can judge Aryn."
"And mine is?!" she exclaimed turning back to yell in her face.
"Look!" she pointed. "I even mention the word sex and your face goes red! Sex, sex, sex, sex...
He interrupted her litany of multi-toned sex. "You're acting down right childish, shush! I am your brother, and I am trying to protect you."
"Protect me? More like prevent me," she said, raising on her feet and flicking him in the forehead. "don't want to share potential partners with me?" Aryn knew making fun of orientation was a bit low, but Toriat was already acting ridiculous about her. "I've seen how you look at people, I see how you look at everyone! You think you have a blind sister?"
"Ok, Aryn," Toriat was trying to remain calm and herd Aryn away from the packed dinning cavern where _anyone_ could be hearing them.
"Maybe this wasn't the best place to bring things up."
"Oh no, this is perfect Toriat," she said, interrupting again. "I...
don't care Toriat.. I, have Nothing! to hide."
"And obviously no shame," Toriat said coldly under his breath. "Look at yourself, you're making a scene."
"Look at _yourself_ you're making a scene." she mimicked back mockingly. Then her face changed as an idea struck her. "Wait, you like him I bet. Thats why you dislike him so much, not only is he more man then you can ever be, you can't ever be _with_ him."
"Now thats taking it to far Aryn! Like I'd lay a hand on a player like that."
"Oh wait, thats right, there is someone else isn't there." She said, voice turning innocent, changing avenue of attack. "But you also can't touch this person, ah, weyrlinghood, what a bother... is that really the reason though? Are you simply attracted to people you _can't_ be with brother?"
**Her name is _way_ too short to communicate displeasure** Toriat thought, trying with every ounce to not yell again.
"Aryn! There you are!" Birigundi smiled as he walked up beside her.
"Oh, and Toriat. Toriat, why didn't you tell me you were related to Aryn?"
"I thought it was common knowledge," Toriat said, snapping the response.
Aryn wondered if Birigundi had heard anything and just was, being nice and not mentioning anything. She wondered if she should continue the shouting match with the topic that started it, right there.
"No, actually, I just found out the other day." The runner was happily oblivious to the subject of their disagreement, though Toriat's sudden turn did make him suspect he was interrupting. "Sorry, I just saw you both and wanted to say hi. I can go..."
"No, lets go together," Aryn said, grabbing one of Birigundi's hands.
"That is, if I'm allowed to be excused brother," she said, quite sarcastically.
"Aryn, have you heard a thing I've said?" Toriat began to worry that his attempt at talking with his sister had the opposite effect.
Perhaps she would be around Birigundi, just to spite him! **I wouldn't put it past her** he thought, getting angry.
"You know, I'm not sure," she turned to look up at Birigundi, "Would you like Toriat to repeat it Birigundi, I think you'd be quite interested in what my _brother_ has to say."
"Aryn!" Toriat said, vehemently pointing a his finger at her, trying to cut her off.
"I'm sorry. I don't mean to get in the middle of a family spat here,"
the runner replied, but he turned his eyes towards the tanner questioningly. Just what _had_ they been fighting about?
"Wait, I remember!" Aryn continued, "You see, my spineless brother doesn't trust you, Birigundi. I'm not sure why, maybe he has a thing for you, maybe you've been with women, and he hasn't!" She shouted the last thing in Torait's face. "And!, not that this concerns you so much, my brother doesn't think I can handle myself, that i have to be protected from the big, scary, men of the weyr." She began making mock pouty sounds as she finished her litany.
Toriat had no idea how to respond to this. First he was silent and still, clenching his fists. For all that Toriat didn't like Birigundi, he couldn't forget that the runner hadn't done anything to him, aside from being in the proximity of his sister. "Bira..." he stopped, still not sure how to respond. "Look I can honestly say I'm not interested in you," he then paused again, trying to meet Birigundi's eyes, shrugging helplessly.. "the rest.... is not so simple."
"Well," the runner said, feeling completely caught in the middle of the whole mess, "I never had a brother or a sister, so I really don't know where you're coming from. But Aryn has lived at the Weyr for a while.
She's learned the difference between a dragon and a wherry by now."
Toriat almost wished Birigundi responded angrily, so he could rage at him. But he hadn't. **Perhaps I should leave it at this.** he thought. "Alright, but I have my eye on you, Birigundi." and with that Toriat stalked away, managing to keep an even, if blank face, until he was out of sight of everyone.
"I'm sure he doesn't believe you," Aryn said, turning to Birigundi, her face grateful. "But thanks." Her voice dropped to a quiet tone.
"I think hes trying to work out a lot himself right now."
Birigundi's own face was blank as he turned to the young woman. "Yes, well..." He was pretty sure he was not going to like having Toriat keeping an eye on him, nor was he happy that Aryn had pressed an obviously sensitive subject for her brother in front of him. "Like I said, I just was popping over to say hi. Perhaps I should get back to my friends."
"Birigundi?" she questioned. The look on his face, she wasn't expecting it. She had just been so wrapped up in being angry at Toriat. She hadn't thought. **I never think** she sighed, regretful.
"Maybe, yes. Sometime later... though?"
"Sure, later." He gave her hand a squeeze before walking back the way he had come.
"Thanks," she said, finding herself alone now. Unsure of what to do after causing such a scene she decided to sit back down and finish her found. She tried reaching out to find comfort in Viyanth, but, alas, the dragonet was still asleep.
