Progress Report

Writers: Noola, Paula
Date Posted: 27th March 2010

Characters: Barnek, Corowal
Description: Barnek and Corowal go over the Lord Holder's children's progress in class.
Location: Emerald Falls Hold
Date: month 8, day 11 of Turn 5
Notes: Mentioned: Felyna

Barnek knocked on the Lord Holder's door, knowing the man was
expecting him. He'd been sent for shortly after class had ended for
the day and the harper was curious as to what it was all about.

"Enter," Corowal called and put a side the recent report from Red Rush hold.

"You wanted to see me, Lord Corowal?" The harper asked as he entered
the man's office.

"Yes, Barnek, take a seat," the Lord holder gestured towards a chair.
"It's time to go through my children's progress again."

Barnek sat in the offered chair. He'd forgotten about the periodic
updates the Lord liked for his children. The schedule was still off
from the recent disturbances. "Certainly, my Lord. Which would you
like to start with?"

"Why don't you start with the eldest?" Corowal asked.

"Yes, sir. Corofel is doing about the same as far as his studies go.
He isn't excelling, but he isn't doing poorly either. I still think
that if he applied himself, he could excel. However, he does seem to
be more interested in stirring up mischief than in his learning."

"Oh yes, that he does," Corowal sighed with the patience of a father
who's seen it all.

Barnek nodded and then moved on to the next oldest, "Ofewal is, of
course, one of my best students. He excels in all of his studies, his
reading and vocabulary are particularly advanced for someone in his
age-group. He has troubles with the songs, but only in his ability to
finish the entire set with the rest of the group. He knows them and
understands them, he just runs out of breath much too easily. The last
set he tried ended in a spell I almost had to summon a healer for." In
truth, Barnek enjoyed teaching Ofewal. He was highly intelligent and
enjoyed learning. It was too bad his interest could not be shared with
his brother. The breathing spells he had occasionally did concern him
a lot as well.

Corowal nodded. "He has inherited his mother's intelligence. The
winter is usually hard on his lungs. He has been sickly since his
birth," The lord holder shook his head sadly. There had been times
when they had nearly lost Ofewal for his breathing problems. "He has
gotten stronger with age though," he continued with a bit more
optimistic tone.

"Ah, that's good then. Maybe it's something he'll outgrow completely.

"Hopefully, although I don't think he'll ever be as sturdy as his
brother," Corowal said.

Barnek would settle for the boy not needing medical attention because
he tried to sing a ballad. "Few boys are quite -that- sturdy as it
is," he replied. "Moving along though, your youngest is progressing at
a pace with the other children her age, though she seems to share her
eldest brother's disinterest in learning, if not his skills in
troublemaking." The little girl's attitude wasn't quite the
disappointment that her brother's was, as she was female, but it still
galled when the child was distracted from her lessons by such silly
things as her dolls.

"Maybe she'll grown into it," Corowal said. "Learning that is, not to
the troublemaking," he added.

"One can only hope. Maybe she'll choose her other brother as a role
model as she gets older." Not that it particularly mattered, but it
would make teaching the girl the basics simpler if she cultivated her
second oldest brother's love of learning.

"Or maybe I can encourage her to take Felyna as rolemodel, she is
well-educated and civilized person," Corowal said musingly.

"Even better," Barnek nodded his approval of the suggestion.

"I will talk with my wife," Corowal said.

"I think it would do the child a world of good."

"I'm sure it would. Is there anything else?" Corowal asked.

"No, that covers it for this time, I believe." Barnek replied. "Will
we be back on our regular schedule for next time?"

"Yes, unless there's another fire, which I fervently hope will not
happen again," Corowal replied. "How about those fire-orphaned
children? Are they settling in well?"

"Well enough. There was some difficulty at first, as you might
imagine. But having a routine helps, I think."

Corowal nodded. They had placed some of the fire victims to Barnek's class.

"I will, of course, keep you appraised of their progress as well, Lord
Corowal. Is there anything else?"

"No, that was all today. We'll see in next month again," Corowal replied.

"Until then, Lord." Barnek rose, inclining his head before heading out
the door. He had some lesson plans he needed to draw up for tomorrow's
class.
