Tavia

Time passed in a fog for Tavia. It was really the increased humming of
the fire lizards and Sawauth's eye peeking around a corner that made
her realize that perhaps it was time to call U'kaiah. When she'd moved
from the table to her bed she'd taken the note for him with her. She
couldn't really tell how many hours had passed  but that wasn't
important now. She called Glory again. Giving her the note and
projecting her need "U'kaiah," was all she said. Then she groaned as
another strong contraction gripped her and the little gold popped from
sight.

In the space of a few breaths, U'kaiah's bronze bugled his arrival to
Suwath, diving down from the sky towards the mouth of her Weyr at almost
dangerous speed in their haste to reach them in time.  The experienced
bronze knew exactly when to turn his body so his wing sails could catch
maximum air and slow their decent enough that he could land safely on
the ledge, a gusty of displaced wind whipping her curtain open as he did
so.  U'kaiah was off his neck in a heart beat, ripping jacket and helmet
off and discarding them unceremoniously at the corner of the ledge!

"Tavia!" he called, striding towards the sleeping area she would
inevitably be.  He stopped short, a mixture of concern and awe on his
face as he watched her strain through the remainder of the contraction.
"Sweetheart, I'm here.  I just have to get cleaned up.  There was
Thread..."  As his crackdusted face and clothes bore testament to.  "Are
you all right?  Is everyone going all right?  Do I have time?"

She broke her concentration long enough to call his name "U'kaiah!"
Relief suffused her that he'd been able to get here in time. She
nodded, she wasn't in transition yet so she was sure he had some time.
"Don't take too long though." She went back to the hardest work she'd
ever done in her life.

"Wingleader, ah, good, you're here.  Yes, get cleaned up.  I have a job
for you."  The big healer gave the man a good-natured smile then turned
back to the woman in labour.  "I need to check your progression."  It
wasn't pleasant, but it would give them an idea of how she was doing.
Vandor would make it quick.

Tavia gave U'kaiah at brief but dazzling smiled before nodding at
Vandor and laying back on the bed to lift and spread her legs. "Hurry
please." She waived a hand in front of her nose as if to ward off the
decaying fish smell of the phosphine rock, crackdust and flaming
dragon.

Vandor did make it quick.  Labour wasn't comfortable for the mother and
this was even less so.  "All right, you can get up and get into a
better position."  Most, he found, preferred _not_ to be on their
backs.  Some did, but more often than not, they would choose to do
something else.  "You should drink something.  Are you hungry?"

"No not hungry," she said. "But I could use a drink of water." She sat
up and swung her feet off the edge of the bed so she was sitting
before the next contraction started.

Vandor obliged and obtained some water for her.  The drudge arrived
with the things he asked for and then he just hovered, using pressure
points to help with the pain whenever she needed it and waited for
U'kaiah to return from cleaning up.
