Vandor

Vandor

"Ah, Qorri." The big healer stepped inside the Headwoman's office with a
smile, his teeth stark against the darkness of his face. "Thank you for
seeing me." He motioned to one of the empty seats in front of her desk, then
arched an eyebrow. "May I?"

"Anytime," she acknowledged, gesturing to the seat with an easy
expression. She had been working with the man for awhile so it was
nothing unusual and he was rather easygoing anyway. "I hope you're not
going to give me bad news today, Vandor. I don't need any more."

"That doesn't sound good." Vandor lowered himself into a chair and
gazed at the headwoman, his dark forehead wrinkling in concern.
"Everything all right?" Well, obviously no, but it was an opening for
her if she wanted to talk.

"Just the snakes...but I've got a plan." Her eyes glittered with unspent malice
as she dreamed about poisoning their crawling bodies. "We haven't had anyone
bitten, have we?"

"Not in the last few days." Vandor shook his head. "We should have
more felines around. They could help take care of the snakes."

"We've had the felines, the whers, the canines, the firelizards-the
whole lot of them running around. I'm going to try and poison the
stupid things though. We'll see how it goes." She had spoken with the
beastcrafters and was fairly confident.

"Really? I haven't seen an increase in animals. Guess I spend too
much time in the infirmary and my quarters. I've been fortunate not to
have a problem with snakes." And Vandor sincerely hoped it would
remain that way. "Be careful with the poison...don't want little ones
getting into it. Or _wanted_ animals for that matter."

"Aye, we'll not be putting it where the babies could find it. And as for
the other animals, the beastcrafters say it does something to the snakes
that it can't do to others." Qorri didn't bother with the particulars though
Vandor might better understand as a healer. "So, how you are all on
supplies?"

"Interesting." Vandor found it rather odd that something could affect
one type of animal, but not others. Of course, what did he know? He
wasn't a beastcrafter! "We need more numbweed, but I expect we'll be
doing a gathering for that sooner rather than later. Fellis needs to be
replenished as well. I've got those and other necessary items in a list
here for you." He slid the parchment upon which his hand had marked
those things the infirmary most needed.

She took it and perused it. "The Holds should be doing numbweed boils
soon. We'll make our request ahead of it so they know to do extra to send
to us for tithe. As for fellis I can surely get some of that without a problem."
It didn't take much of that to have the desired effect so Qorri only kept so
much in stores since it lost its potency over time.

"We're getting low on bandages as well. We'll have enough for Threadfall,
I don't let it slide that far...but of course, everything's on the list.
I shouldn't bore you with redundancy." Vandor smiled alittle. "Far
be it for me to be boring to someone."

"Okay tell me this...How many do we have injured currently-minor or major?"
She had seen some numbers, but it made better sense when she spoke directly
to him.

"I had a feeling you'd ask that." Vandor chuckled and slid across
another piece of parchment. "List of names and their current status.
I've also included a day of release here. We have a few that won't be
ready for some time...but you can see it here, of course."

"Ummhmm..." She frowned at seeing some of that information since there
were people she needed who wouldn't be back soon. She could make do,
though. "How many new babies?" That was of particular consequence since
it meant speaking to the Weyrwoman about fostermothers. It also meant
future replenishment of her staff.

"We had three just this past Sevenday - we were rather busy. One was
born during Threadfall." That had certainly been interesting, but they
had dealt with it. "I know of at least two women due sometime this sevenday
so we'll have more in the coming days." Vandor didn't specialize in
midwifery, but he'd had the privilege of delivering a baby every now and
again.

"Mmmm...healthy children means I'm feeding them enough." Qorri smiled slyly
at that. "Allright, it's going to be time soon for the candidates' physicals so we'll
need to set that up but other than that I think that was all I had on my list to
discuss."

"That should be next month, am I right?" Vandor made a note on a
parchment he had in front of him. "I can leave the second sevenday
with open slots for that very purpose. Is that amenable?"

"Sounds good," she marked it down on her own calendar. "Of course
if something happens before now and then, we may need to adjust but..."
She left it hanging. They were all wondering if it would be Ikoladith or
Panitath. If it was Jyramikah, Qorri was on her own.

"Of course. Just let me know, we'll work it out." Vandor made one last
note and then looked to the headwoman. "Anything else to discuss?"

"I need some more of that liniment that's flower scented for my personal
use," she threw in, knowing it soothed her sore feet and muscles.

"I'll have some sent to you as soon as I get back." Vandor promised,
giving her a smile. "If you like, I can show you some pressure points
you can use to help with your aches as well."

"Mmmmm maybe after dinner service tomorrow before we start doing
the cooking. It'll feel good right about then." Qorri was already
looking forward to it.

Vandor nodded. "That's fine. It will help loosen you up, but you'll
probably want to do them again afterwards. Also, try to keep your
posture straight, that will help reduce the stress on your
body."

It was sort of hard to keep her back straight when her chest was so heavy,
but she didn't mention that. Qorri could handle it-she had for so many turns
and it was her burden to bear. "Thanks for the advice. I'll look forward
to seeing you then. I'm sure you've got patients to tend so I don't want to take
up any more of your time."

"One more thing." Vandor held up a finger. "Keep your knees slightly
bent and your hips tilted forward. That will help your posture." He
placed his finger against his nose and grinned. "Let me know if you
need anything else, Qorri."

"You know me-I'll be sure to," she quipped before straightening
up her posture with a grunt.
