Vandor stepped out into the waiting area to take the next patient. He
smiled as he looked at the list, then turned his eyes to the young
woman who had come to see him. "Hello Pierka." He greeted, his deep
voice warm. He stepped to the side and motioned for her to follow him
before he moved back into the infirmary proper.
"Hi Vandor," she smiled as she rose from the chair and walked through
the curtains.
"Have a seat." Vandor sat after she did and he leaned forward. His
large fingers laced together over his knee as he regarded the young
woman. "Now, what can I do for you?"
She slid onto the table. "Well," she said softly. "The dolphin's tell
me I'm pregnant."
"I see." It was nothing new. Such things happened all the time,
especially at the Weyr. Vandor didn't say anything else, just waited
for the girl to get whatever it was she wanted to say off of her
chest.
"I've been having the sick stomach in the mornings. You've got
something for that right?"
"Morning sickness is very common." Unfortunate, Vandor new of some
ways to deal with it that women didn't usually listen to. "I have
some things, yes, along with some advice. If you heed it, it will
greatly decrease your nausea - possibly even get rid of it all
together." One would think women would do just that so they wouldn't
be so miserable, and it surprised him how most of them just ignored
his advice.
Pierka nodded eagerly. "Okay," she said. "I'll do whatever you think will help."
"Well first, you'll need to cut back on things like bread. Now I
know, they might be the only things that you seem to be able to eat,
but hear me out." Vandor raised a hand just to be sure she didn't try
to interrupt. "I've got some oil with some minerals that I want you
to rub on four times a day. Just rub it on your arms and make sure it
soaks in really well. Try to eat more fish, nuts, greens, and take
smaller meals more often. In a few days, you'll feel better once you
get the right nutrients in you."
She twisted her lips at the mention of no bread. That was about the
only thing she'd been able to keep down recently. But she nodded and
took note of his instructions. Eating fish wasn't a problem. She loved
fish and had since she could remember. "Alright," she said softly. "Do
you have any idea yet when I might be due?"
"Well, you said it was Turn's End, Turn's Beginning, right?" Vandor
waited for the affirmative, then nodded. "Then it will in the seventh
month. Do you have any other questions or concerns?"
"No," she shook her head. "N'van... er... The Weyrleader has put me
into the Queen's wing so I'll still be able to do my part for awhile."
She smiled rather shakily.
"Well, you be sure to come in for your monthly check ups - though that
will be weekly the last month." Vandor's tone was gentle, but it was
obvious he expected the young woman to comply.
"Yes sir," she said. It was largely due to Vandor and his abilities as
a healer that she'd gotten through her scoring and had almost complete
recovery.
"And if you need someone to talk to, feel free to come to me. I've
got pretty large ears." He smiled again at that and his teeth gleamed
against his dark skin.
"Yes, sir," she said again this time grinning and peering at his ears.
But she refrained from agreeing with him.
