"I thought the morning sickness was over. But I woke up today throwing
my guts up." Jeyme groaned as she sat on an examination table in front
of Vandor. She normally saw Luthar but the man was busy with other
patients.
"I see." Vandor was listening, but he was also perusing the records
of the patient. Although she could tell him what she'd been through,
he wanted to see the notes the other healer had made to be sure
nothing was accidentally was omitted. "You're not quite halfway
through the pregnancy." Once he was done gleaning as much information
as he could without requiring the patient wait too long, Vandor set
the parchments aside. "How long ago did you last feel nausea?"
"I haven't been sick like this for a couple of sevendays." Jeyme
admitted. There was a spark of worry blossoming in the pit of her
stomach as well. Was getting morning sickness again unusual? Was there
something wrong?
"Have you felt any nausea since this morning?" Vandor rose so he
could gently palpitate the sides of her throat. "Have you been able
to eat anything?"
"If I get close to food I start experiencing nausea again." Jeyme
couldn't even stand to walk by the Dining Cavern, much less try to put
a piece of food in her mouth.
"Morning sickness can last an entire pregnancy, unfortunately, and it
can come and go." Vandor carefully felt her lymph nodes, then
tenderly pressed against her stomach.
Jeyme groaned at the words "entire pregnancy." She had thought for
sure that she was done with it. Even though she was on limited duty,
it still made getting up for drills in the morning a difficult task.
Of course, she knew that Cyradis and Kapera were both understanding,
but she hated not being able to attend to her duties. "Do you have
something for the nausea then?"
"I have some tea that can help. I also want to talk to you about your
diet. What are you eating?" Vandor offered his hand so that she
would have an easier time sitting up, then settled back on the stool.
A guilty blush spread across Jeyme's features, "Whatever I can get my
hands on, really. Currently my favorite dish is fried greens with
syrup on top."
"Actually, the greens aren't so bad." Vandor chuckled a little. "Now
the batter and syrup, however, might make things worse. I've found if
you eat a generous amount of fish, meat, and fats along with greens
women tend to have less morning sickness. Strangely enough, the
things that supposedly are easier to keep down actually exacerbate the
problem. Granted, it helps if a woman eats this way before she gets
pregnant, for it's the nutrients in the foods that seem to help with
that."
Jeyme couldn't even think about fish without her stomach beginning to
churn. "Meats haven't been going down that well. I have mostly stuck
to vegetables."
"Make sure you add in fats. For the meats, stick to mild meats and
try just a bite or two at a time. In addition, I want you to soak
your feet in epsom salts at least once a day. They contain magnesium
and that can really help the nausea as well. Are you exercising?"
Dragonriders generally did, even those who were pregnant, but he
always asked.
"Yes, sir." She figured sex with D'hol should definitely count as
exercise too, but she didn't think she necessarily needed to discuss
that with Vandor.
"All right, make sure you're not overdoing it and drink twice as much
water as you would normally." Vandor grinned, his teeth stark against
the darkness of his skin. "And yes, that means you will have to go to
the bathroom a lot, but your body will adjust if you do it
consistently.
Ugh, water. She rarely drank water. If it wasn't klah then it was
fruit juice. Her fingers trailed down her torso and over the small
bump of the baby growing within her. **But I can do it for you, Baby.** She
thought, as she nodded to Vandor, "I will do that. Thank you, sir."
"Of course. Now, if you continue to have trouble, don't hesitate to
come see me. If you'll give me a few moments, I'll prepare that tea
mixture and then you can be on your way." Vandor rose, but he didn't
leave, just in case she had any other questions or concerns.
"Oh, no, I think that is it." She assured him, flashing a small smile.
Vandor wasn't Luthar, but she found that she liked the healer. He was
polished, professional, and to the point. She could appreciate that.
"All right, back in just a moment and then you're free." He flashed
another brilliantly white smile then disappeared to fetch the tea.
